I am a PostDoctoral researcher at the astronomy department at Universidad de Chile for six years now right after I got my PhD in astronomy in the same university. For the last ten years I have been working in an international collaboration astronomical project called Sloan Digital Sky Survey, which is one of the major astronomical surveys in history. They map the entire sky looking for stars and galaxies focusing in our galaxy the Milky Way. In there I am part of the software and operations team, writing and reviewing code to ensure that our science goals are met by selecting stars to be observed and transforming those lists into machine readable files to be interpreted at the telescope. My duties include querying and maintaining database to predict the scientific retrieve of our observations, crossmatch astronomical positions of billions of stars from different catalogues, and actively participate in code documentation. Most of the work I have done is based on Python and PostgreSQL, but I have also worked with codes written in IDL, Fortran, and specialized astronomical languages like IRAF.

Work & Experience

S

Targeting Lead

Sloan Digital Sky Survey
Jan'2020 - Nov'2022
• Coordinate, define & document target-based observing requirements (calibrations; magnitude limits; lunation, etc.). • Evaluate and ingest data to the database, lead coordinate crossmatch of catalogues with billions of entries, and validate main survey and complementary observing data.
S

Target Field Selection Coordinator

Sloan Digital Sky Survey
Jan'2018 - Dec'2019
Responsible for selecting fields to be observed every month at Irénée du Pont 2.5-meter telescope at Las Campanas Observatory (LCO), considering science goals, LST observing availability, weather conditions, signal-to-noise requirements, and plate stocks. • Coordinated with telescope staff the progress of core and contributed scientific projects. • Participated in selecting specific targets to be included in each field based on galaxy region, kinematical and chemical information, and observing cadence.
U

Postdoctoral Research Associate

University of Chile
Jan'2016 - Nov'2022
Main research focused on using photometric and spectroscopic data to analyze evolution and formation of the Milky Way through the study of satellite dwarf galaxies.
U

Plate Design Coordinator

University of Chile
Jan'2014 - Dec'2018
In charge of running and maintaining Python and IDL based pipelines to select the stars observed at different regions of the sky to ensure that the survey met the goals defined in the science requirement document.

Projects

C
Cartons_inventory is a module created to retrieve database information from a list of cartons, where a carton is a set of stars selected with the same algorithm and that share the same science goal. The main wrapper of this code is the method process_cartons which starts from a group of cartons and first gets the carton dependent information, i.e. parameters that are the same for all targets from a given carton. Then, one of its main purposes it to use the method assign_target_info to assign star dependent information for each carton, i.e. parameters that can differ for different stars from the same carton. These parameters can be sets/ranges describing all the different values found for cadence_pk, cadence_label, lambda_eff, instrument_pk, and instrument label along with the minimum and maximum values of priority and value. Given that there are some arguments in process_cartons that are incompatible with others (which will be indicated with an assertion error) for simplicity all the default arguments of process_cartons are False and None when applicable. This code can be used to create an input file acceptable by process_cartons from a targetdb query, check the existence of a list of cartons, assign target dependent information for a group of cartons, visualize the content of cartons, getting a dataframe with all the targets from a carton, and saving the information from a group of cartons in a .csv file.
